USA PATRIOT Act faces Reauthorization
Nancy Talanian, Director of Bill of Rights Defense Committee
A bi-partisan group of three Republicans and three Democrats vowed yesterday to block the renewal of the USA PATRIOT Act. With many provisions of the Act set to expire next month, Republican negotiators had made a compromise on Wednesday that set out to make 14 of 16 provisions permanent. The compromise would also extend controversial provisions on wiretapping and FBI surveillance of personal and business information to seven years. The bi-partisan group, including Democrat Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Republican Larry Craig of Idaho, has challenged the compromise extension of the USA PATRIOT Act at a time when lawmakers are anxious to leave for Thanksgiving break. Chinese America: A one-hour Special
GUESTS: Peter Kwong and Dusanka Miscevic, co-authors of “Chinese America: The Untold Story of America’s Oldest New Community.â€
During his trip to East Asia, President Bush has openly criticized the Chinese government, saying “”We encourage China to continue down the road of reform and openness, because the freer China is at home, the greater the welcome it will receive abroad.†He compared it to China’s rival, Taiwan, implying that Taiwan was a shining example of democracy, and an open economy. Today we take a look at America’s oldest new community, as it’s called by Peter Kwong and Dusanka Miscevic. They have co-written a book about the Chinese American community, and their on-going relationship to their homeland, as well as how the US has treated them historically and currently. I spoke with Peter and …

Internet Governance Discussed at World Summit
GUEST: Lee McKnight, member of the Internet Governance project, Associate Prof. of information studies, Syracuse University
Negotiators from more than 100 countries are meeting in Tunisia for the World Summit on the Information Society, under the United Nations auspices. The main focus is on who will control the internet. Up until now, an independent US-based entity, called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, was overseeing the handing out of domain names. As is standard practice in all international meetings, actual negotiations take place before the meetings begin, and last night, an 11-th hour agreement behind closed doors left the United States with ultimate oversight of the main computers that direct the Internet’s flow of information, commerce and dissent. I spoke yesterday with Lee McKnight, a member of the …

The Great War for Civilization
GUESTS: Robert Fisk, Middle East Correspondent for the Independent, author of “The Great War for Civilization: The Conquest of the Middle Eastâ€
Last week’s bombs in Amman, Jordan, killed 57 people – they are a taste of the daily realities in neighboring Iraq. Police have arrested an Iraqi woman who failed to detonate her explosives. The woman was identified as the sister of Jordanian-born Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s former right hand man in Iraq’s volatile Anbar province. This is just the latest in a daily barrage of news from the Middle East and Muslim world in general, that apparently drives George W. Bush’s so-called War on Terror. This morning we’re joined in studio by one of the best known reporters in the world, who has spent decades on the front lines of the Middle East. Robert Fisk is based in Beirut, Lebanon as …
