Cindy SheehanCindy Sheehan, mother of fallen soldier, Casey Sheehan appeared this past Saturday at an exciting event to highlight the issues of war, military recruitment, and how to combat the religious right. The event took place at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, a church very active in the peace and justice movement. Sheehan was joined by an exciting cast of speakers and performers, including actor Martin Sheen, Iraq veterans Pablo Parades, Tim Goodrich, Jeff Key, Robert Acosta, and others, and a special appearance by musician Jackson Browne.

Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has declared emergency rule today. She alleges a conspiracy by political opponents, Communists and rightists to remove her from power. The emergency rule is as effective as martial law. Rallies marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of Ferdinand Marcos, the former Philippine dictator, have been banned.

Wetback: The Undocumented DocumentaryA look at the journey of the undocumented, and the racist vigilantes that protest them, as we continue our fund drive.

On Saturday, February 18th, Minuteman Project co-founder Chris Simcox of Arizona visited the city of Costa Mesa. He was one of the featured speakers for a council meeting of the John Birch Society. At the Hilton hotel, where the meeting was held, Simcox urged those in attendance to oppose any “guest worker,” or amnesty bills in Congress. He was also on hand to recruit volunteers to join him for an April patrol of the U.S.–Mexican border. Claiming that a previous joint operation with James Gilchrist had effectively shut down a 23 mile stretch of the border, Simcox’s planned patrol in April is much more ambitious. Two hours before his scheduled execution on Tuesday night, the State of California postponed killing Michael Morales, who was convicted of a rape and murder by coerced testimony. Morales had legally challenged the use of lethal injection as a form of “cruel and unusual punishment.”

ACLU Freedom FilesAs we continue our fund drive, we’ll take a look into the ACLU Freedom Files, with a focus on Civil Liberties, racial profiling and dissent in the post 9-11 era. Plus, special guest Constitutional Lawyer, Ann Fagan Ginger.

The US Senate is on track to vote on a reviser version of the USA PATRIOT Act. The Patriot Act was put into place shortly after 9-11 with a near-unanimous vote in Congress despite the fact that most representatives had not even read the entire bill. Even though hundreds of municipalities have passed resolutions against the act, only a handful of Senators, including Democrat Russ Feingold, have raised their voice in opposition. According to Feingold, the Senate made only “a few insignificant, face-saving changes” on the bill last December.

Caught in the CrossfireCaught in the Crossfire – a documentary by Mark Manning. And, Naomi Klein and George Galloway on US policy in Iraq and beyond. As we continue KPFK’s fund drive.

The influential Iraqi Shia cleric, Muqtada Al-Sadr, denounced the Iraqi constitution in an interview this past Saturday. The cleric claims that federalism in Constitution will encourage sectarianism. Meanwhile, violence continues in Iraq. Early this morning, six people were killed in Mosul when a man blew himself up in a restaurant near a police station. Twelve more people died midday as a bomb was set off on a bus in Baghdad. US actions in Iraq have only led to more instability and more bloodshed.
