GUEST: Uri Davis, Israeli Peace Activist
Israelis began voting today in general elections widely regarded as one of the most important in its history. Late opinion polls revealed a high percentage of undecided voters raising the possibility of surprises. Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is expected to win. He has called the vote a referendum on his plans to unilaterally draw Israel’s borders. Jewish settlers in the West Bank cast their ballots for parties that vowed to resist any pullout from Palestinian territory. And many Israelis in Tel Aviv welcomed any prospect of reducing Israel’s occupation. Meanwhile the Palestinian parliament approved Hamas’ new Cabinet and their basic principles on Tuesday. Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is expected to swear in the new government on Thursday.

“Surviving Twice: Amerasian Children of the Vietnam War,†is the title of independent journalist Trin Yarborough’s new book. On Saturday, more than half a million people turned out on the streets of downtown Los Angeles in what was the largest march in the city’s history. Wearing mostly white, immigrants, their families, and their supporters poured out of city buses and trains to fill 26 city blocks. They were carrying US and Mexican flags, and signs against HR 4437, the harshest anti-immigrant Congressional bill in recent history. Los Angeles immigrants joined their counter parts in cities across the country who marched against the bill last week. The Senate is set to debate its version of HR 4437 today. While many Republicans plan to push the enforcement-only bill, President Bush favors a guest worker program. Some immigrant groups are backing a bill by Senators John McCain and Edward …

GUEST: Maria Roman, transgender Latina activist, Ron Brenesky, Co-Founder of Unity Coalition
As part of a campaign launched in September 2005, Amnesty International has released a new report entitled, “Stonewalled: Still demanding respect.†The report highlights police abuse and misconduct against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the USA. Cases of abuse, harassment, and humiliation are most common against transgender, minorities, and young people. Recently, a Los Angeles based transgender Latina was assaulted, and incarcerated by Miami police after she appeared on the Cristina show. After the show Maria Roman had gone to a popular Miami night club. It was there that she was assaulted verbally and physically by a partygoer. Instead of helping her, Miami police that were present only furthered her humiliation.
