CAFTA – one year later

Listen to this segment | the entire program

Stop CAFTAGUEST: Andrew de Sousa, Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala

One year after the US House of Representatives narrowly passed the Central American Free trade Agreement, or CAFTA, grassroots activists are calling for trade with justice. The Stop CAFTA Coalition has drafted a pledge for trade justice, and is demanding that candidates running for office in the upcoming November elections adhere to the pledge if elected. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the trade agreement by only two votes last year. Critics assail CAFTA for decreasing exports, eroding environmental standards and rolling back workers rights in Central American nations that signed on to the deal. These include El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala. CAFTA most recently went into effect in Guatemala on July …

WTO – Doha Round Fails

Listen to this segment | the entire program

anti-WTO protestsGUEST: Anuradha Mittal, founder and Executive Director, Oakland Institute

The Doha Round of World Trade Organization talks officially collapsed this Monday in Geneva at a meeting among representatives of the G6 countries. The G6 includes Australia, Brazil, the European Union, Japan, India and the United States. The primary reason is the US’s refusal to bring down subsidies for its farmers. Much time was spent discussing a key US demand – the lowering of import duties on agricultural as well as non-agricultural products. The US, meanwhile, targeted the EU’s failure to ease access to its agricultural market for foreign goods. EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson said Washington was asking “too much from others in exchange for doing too little themselves.” WTO Cheif, Pascal Lamy has told its …

California Clean Money and Fair Elections Act

Listen to this segment | the entire program

Prop 89GUEST: Carmen Balber, Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights

The California Clean Money and Fair Elections Act has just qualified for the upcoming 2006 November elections. Proposition 89, as it will be known on the ballot, proposes to set up a public financing system for political campaigns. The initiative is based in part on similar systems currently in place in Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Portland, Oregon and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The initiative hopes to make politicians accountable to voters rather than special interests by limiting contributions and establishing public funding for candidates who agree not to accept private money for their campaigns. Funding would be provided by a 0.2 percent increase in corporate taxes. Penalties such as jail time and removal from office would be established …
