GUEST: Telesforo San Diago, grade school teacher in Oaxaca, Angela Thielan, interpreter
Last Friday, Amnesty International urged Mexican federal authorities to address escalating violence and human rights abuses in Oaxaca. In the most recent wave of violence at least two people have been murdered and many more injured and imprisoned. Information obtained by Amnesty International strongly suggests that militias are working in conjunction with state security forces. For months, protestors have been calling on Ulises Ruiz to step down as Governor of Oaxaca. An ongoing strike of Oaxaca’s tens of thousands of teachers that began on May 22nd has transformed into a movement to oust Ruiz. On June 14th, PRI Governor Ulises Ruiz ordered riot police to forcefully break up an encampment of striking teacher’s …

GUEST: Ross Eisenbray, Vice President and Policy Director at the Economic Policy Institute, co-author of a report, “Supervisor in Name Only”
The National Labor Relations Board will be making a ruling in several cases soon, which could have repercussions for millions of workers. The NLRB’s desicion in the so-called “Kentucky River” cases could broaden the definition of a ‘supervisor’ and make it illegal to organize certain employees in a range of industries including health care, building trades, broadcasting and port shipping. In effect they could decide to make it easier for companies to declare certain workers supervisors, thus making them ineligible for union membership. Previous rulings from the board on the same issue were made at a time when the appointees were Democratic, and decided to side with …

As tropical storm Ernesto hits Cuba this morning, we focus on the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina which took 1500 lives in Louisana and Mississippi last August. President Bush is making a two day visit to both states, promising that the government would learn from mistakes made last year. The White House was harshly criticised for what was seen as a slow response to the country’s worst natural disaster. Meanwhile, acclaimed film maker Spike Lee’s new documentary “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts,†will air on HBO this week. Corp Watch has released a …

GUEST: Elliot Mincberg, Legal Director and Senior Vice President of People for the American Way
The results of this November’s Congressional elections could have a serious impact on national and international politics with voters favoring many Democrats. Today we’ll take a look at one race in North Carolina where a Republican candidate is challenging an incumbent Democrat. Republican Vernon Robinson, a former member of the Winston-Salem City Council, is challenging Brad Miller, a two term Democrat representing the 13th district in North Carolina. What distinguishes Robinson’s campaign, is the openly racist rhetoric in his campaign ads and attacks on Miller. Robinson, who is Black, accuses Miller of offering handouts to immigrants and costing voters their jobs.

GUEST: Joel Rodriguez Flores, Isla Vista Tenants Union, Cynthia Frias, resident of Cedarwood
This month in Isla Vista, residents at Cedarwood Apartments received a thirty day eviction notice in what may be the largest mass eviction in the area in recent years. Cedarwood Apartments is home to more than fifty families who are mostly low-income and Latino. Some suspect that the August eviction is due to the ever increasing enrollment of students at the University of California at Santa Barbara and the pressure they put on the housing market. Furthermore, the Cedarwood evictions come at a time of increasing gentrification in Santa Barbara. In July, the Santa Barbara City Council denied an appeal against the proposed condominium conversions of affordable rental units. In Santa Maria, plans are in …

GUESTS: Ernest Savage, independent film maker, Becky Dennison, Co-Director of the Los Angeles Community Action Network
On Monday August 21st, officials from the City of Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union tried to reach a compromise over police treatment of the homeless. The ACLU has a lawsuit to try to block arrests of homeless people who camp on public sidewalks. Police Chief William J. Bratton and City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo vowed to fight the suit, claiming it hampers their ability to “clean up Skid Row.” Yesterday, in a press conference, the Los Angeles Community Action Network released video footage of LAPD officers confiscating personal property from homeless people and dumping it onto other streets. The footage also shows LAPD officers arresting homeless people for …
