During Arnold Schwarzenegger’s campaign for governor in the 2003 recall election, a number of women came forward to reveal their sexual harassment and assault by Arnold. The Los Angeles Times printed extensive reports just prior to that election. Now, just three years later, there almost no mention of Arnold’s sexist escapades. But some women are refusing to remain silent. More than a hundred women from across California have signed a letter to remind voters of the seriousness of the accusations of 16 women against Schwarzenegger that surfaced during the 2003 recall campaign, and those that have surfaced since then involving minors. Referring to the recent Republican sex scandal of …

GUEST: Green Party gubernatorial candidate Peter Camejo, co-author of “California Under Corporate Rule,â€
Peter Miguel Camejo of the Green Party is currently campaigning for what will be his last bid to become governor of California. Camejo has run for the governor’s office on previous occasions; most recently in the 2003 recall elections. In this year’s election race, Camejo is running on a platform that would guarantee universal health care for all Californians, enact living wages, and abolish California’s three strikes law. However, many voters are not aware of Camejo’s campaign or his platform, as a media black-out has largely ignored his campaign. Furthermore, Camejo was not allowed to participate alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Phil Angelides in their lone gubernatorial debate. In response, Camejo launched the first television …

British economist Sir Nicholas Stern has authored a 700 page review on the economic impact of climate change. The report warns that the world faces an economic collapse on the level of a World War or a depression if climate change is not averted. Published just yesterday, it is the most comprehensive review ever carried out on the economics of climate change. The White House responded yesterday with a non-committal statement welcoming the Stern review as a contribution to the body of knowledge on climate change but did not address its calls for fundamental change in policy. The statement said, “The president has long recognized that climate change is a …

On November 7th, voters in California will decide on a number of ballot propositions affecting the state. One ballot measure that Californians will be deciding is Proposition 85, the “Waiting Period and Parental Notification Before Termination of Minor’s Pregnancy Initiative.” If passed, proposition 85 would require physicians to notify a parent or legal guardian at least 48 hours before they perform an abortion on a minor under 18 years of age. California’s voters rejected a similar initiative, proposition 73, in last year’s fall elections by a vote of 53% to 47%. Recent polls show a tight race this …

Mexican federal police backed by armored vehicles and water cannons tore down barricades and stormed the embattled city of Oaxaca yesterday seizing control of the city center from protesters who had held it for five months. What began in late May of this year as a teachers’ strike, descended into chaos after Oaxaca police tried to retake the central plaza the following month using violence. Protesters have accused Governor Ulysses Ruiz of rigging his 2004 election and using thugs to kill or intimidate political opponents. They say they will not stop their protest without his resignation. The main organization that has formed out of the protests is the Oaxaca People’s Popular Assembly, or APPO, its Spanish …

A statewide poll released last Wednesday revealed that Democratic Gubernatorial candidate, State Treasurer Phil Angelides has failed to narrow Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s double-digit lead in the contest for governor. Angelides has pledged to demand the return of California National Guard troops from the war in Iraq and has heavily linked Schwarzenegger to Bush. Yet the poll, conducted by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California, found that just 57% of Democrats back Angelides. Even in the Democrats’ greatest stronghold, the Bay Area, Schwarzenegger has a slim majority over Angelides. Additionally the poll showed that Californians are leaning toward approval of all but one of the $43 billion in bond measures …

The mid-term elections are around the corner and today we spend the morning taking a look at various Congressional races across the country. Democrats are poised to win a slim majority in the House of Representatives but many races are still too close to call. In the Senate, Democrats are facing tough resistance from rural voters according to a series of polls by the LA Times and Bloomberg. If Democrats can’t break through on November 7th to win Senate races in at least two of three rural states — Missouri, Tennessee and Virginia — they are unlikely to control the chamber. Democrats are leading in hotly contested …
