Where’s the Fruit?

According to a recently released study by The Prevention Institute and the Strategic Alliance for Healthy Food and Activity Environments, over half of the most prominently advertised children’s foods featuring fruits in their packaging actually contain no fruit ingredients. The study entitled, “Where’s the Fruit?” also found that thirteen of the thirty-seven children’s food products examined featured packaging that included multiple references to fruit despite having no fruit ingredients. Whereas parents might be drawn to images of fruit or labels featuring adjectives such as “fruity,” as healthier choices for their children, many products studied in the report actually are high in added sweeteners. Byron Hurt’s new documentary “Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes,” will premiere tomorrow in Los Angeles. Hurt’s documentary explores the conceptualizations of manhood, sexism, and homophobia in rap music and Hip-Hop culture. A self-proclaimed Hip-Hop head and anti-sexist activist, Byron Hurt attempts to create dialogue through the film on the misogyny present in mainstream Hip-Hop. “Beyond Beats and Rhymes,” features in-depth interviews with Hip-Hop historians, scholars and male rappers such as Chuck D, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def. Thousands are expected to take to the streets of Los Angeles this Saturday to send a clear message to the Democratic controlled Congress and President Bush to bring all US troops home immediately and cut off funding for the war in Iraq. The demonstrations in LA and across the US come in the wake of President Bush’s announcement to increase troop levels in Iraq. The march in Downtown Los Angeles will begin at 12 noon at the Democratic Party Office at 9th and Figueroa and will end at the Federal Building. Anti-war activist leader Cindy Sheehan, who lost her son Casey in Iraq, will be among the many speakers who will address the rally this Saturday.
