In 2001, four young British men of Pakistani origin, Ruhal Ahmed, Asif Iqbal and Shafiq Rasul and their friend, Monir, traveled to Pakistan for a wedding. While there, on a whim, they decided to travel to Afghanistan, which at the time was being bombed by US forces. Once there, they lost their friend Monir in the wartime chaos, and were captured by Northern Alliance fighters. They were then handed over to US forces who transported them to Guantanamo Bay base in Cuba. The three men, unaware of why they were captured and imprisoned, spent three years in Guantanamo, enduring relentless imprisonment, interrogations and torture. Bill Moyers has had a long and varied career that includes a stint as deputy director of the Peace Corps (1961–63). A special advisor to President Lyndon Johnson, Moyers also served as Johnson’s press secretary from 1965 to 1967. But Moyers is best known for his journalism, first in print at the Long Island, New York daily Newsday, where he served as publisher from 1967–70, and later in television. Moyers has received more than 30 Emmy Awards in recognition of his contributions in various roles.
