Zoellick Nominated to Lead World Bank

On Wednesday, President Bush nominated Robert B. Zoellick as a candidate for Managing Director of the World Bank. Zoellick had previously served in high-ranking foreign policy and economic policy posts under three Republican presidents, including Ronald Reagan. He served as US trade representative under Bush in 2001 during which he distinguished himself primarily by protecting U.S. pharmaceutical firms in global trade talks. Zoellick was also known for repeatedly rejecting developing countries’ concerns on issues like agriculture, access to medicines, and protecting biodiversity. ACLU Files Suit Against Boeing Subsidiary for Torture Flights

Yesterday, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit against a subsidiary of Boeing Corporation for its participation in the U.S. government’s “extraordinary rendition” program. Jeppesen Dataplan Incorporated is being sued on behalf of three men who the ACLU said were abducted by the CIA and flown to foreign prisons where they were tortured. The complaint, filed in California, accuses Jeppesen of playing a crucial role in the U.S. government’s unlawful “extraordinary rendition,” program. Jeppesen is said to have provided flight and logistical support to a total of seventy such rendition flights since late 2001. 30 Years Since Alex Haley’s Roots

Thirty years ago this year, the mini series based on Alex Haley’s ground breaking book, “Roots: The Saga of an American Family,” aired on television in the US, casting a spell across the country. Alex Haley traced his ancestry back to a proud African tribesman named Kunta Kinte who was forced into slavery. His novel won a Pulitzer prize and the National Book Critics Award. The miniseries, which won more than 30 Emmys, attracted over 80 million viewers per episode, with more than a 100 million viewing the finale. Despite these successes, the book had a troubled history. Earlier in the week Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez refused to renew the license for the TV station Radio Caracas Television, known as RCTV) VHF. RCTV was the nation’s oldest private broadcaster, operating since 1953 and had a record of airing mostly right wing view points. During the two-day coup against Chavez in 2002, RCTV, along with four major privately-owned television channels openly supported the opposition government. Now, the Chavez government has threatened to crack down on another privately owned broadcaster, Globovision, accusing it of inciting an assassination attempt on the president.
