GUEST: Francisca Porchas, Lead organizer with the Bus Riders Union
Last Thursday, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved a compromise deal that will raise bus and rail fares. The decision was reached following a day-long public hearing in which nearly 1500 people from the community attended to largely voice their opposition to the fare hike. Though somewhat less drastic than the original MTA fare hike proposal, the compromise deal will raise the current single bus fare rate of $1.25 to $1.50 by July 2009 and $1.80 by July 2011. More drastic increases will come with day passes being raised from $3 dollars to $5 dollars in 2008. Monthly passes will peak at $90 dollars by 2012. The rationale provided by the MTA for the fare …

“Most women spend at least … about a hundred minutes a day scrutinizing instead of loving their bodies… That’s one hundred minutes they could spend reading an amazing book, feeling grateful for family and friends, memorizing a poem, considering concepts of God, or taking action against global warming.” Those are the words of Courtney E. Martin. Understanding why women obsess about their bodies is a question that Martin struggles with in her new book, “Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters: The …

GUESTS: Lee Siu Hin, National Coordinator of the National Immigrant Solidarity Network, Arnoldo Garcia, Enforcement Project Director with the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights
As the House and Senate recess this week, immigrant rights advocates around the country are taking a good hard look at SB 1438, a bill passed by the Senate in recent weeks. While the bill includes a path to citizenship for 12 million undocumented immigrants, that path includes a $5000 fine and a requirement that they return home before coming back to the US. The bill also imposes an untested merit-point system that narrows the channels through which family members can immigrate. And it calls for hundreds of thousands of temporary guest workers to work for two years in …

GUEST: George Monbiot, weekly columnist for the Guardian Newspaper, author of “Heat: How to Stop the Planet from Burning”
Most KPFK listeners know well the reality and danger of the warming of the planet, and that this global warming is happening as a direct result of human behavior through the burning of fossil fuels and the release of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. Today we spend the hour, not as much discussing the scientific consensus over global warming or the political struggle over what to do about global warming. Instead, we’ll talk about exactly what goals need to be met to stop the planet from literally burning to death, and what all of us, individuals, organizations, and governments, can do to meet those goals. British journalist George …
