War Made EasyWar Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death

As of yesterday, at least 3,571 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The AP count is a little higher than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT.

Today we end the funddrive with a look at how propaganda is used by governments and repeated unquestioningly by the mainstream media to sell war to the US public. Based on the 2005 book by media analyst Norman Solomon, “War Made Easy,” a new documentary by the same name has just been released by the Media Education Foundation. The film, …

Scott RitterWaging Peace: The Art of War for the Antiwar Movement

Former UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter is an unlikely person to be offering advice for the antiwar movement. He is Republican who voted for George Bush in 2000. But ever since the Bush administration began making moves toward war in Iraq, Ritter has staunchly exposed the rhetoric from the White House as lies and propaganda. He has spent years observing the antiwar movement, who have hailed him as a truth teller in the struggle to end the Iraq war, and to prevent a war with Iran. Now, Ritter’s new book, Waging Peace: The Art of War for the Antiwar Movement, candidly analyzes the weaknesses in progressive movements for peace and justice, …

Maxed Out

Most Americans have gone into debt or are in debt one point or another in their lives. Most of us have run up credit card or other forms of debt and been daunted by the prospect of paying it off. Most of us have one or more credit cards. In fact the average American has about eight credit card and about $8000 in debt per household. In 2003, consumer debt hit an all-time, record-high of $1.98 trillion, not counting mortgage debt. Household savings are also plummeting. In 1993, the average American’s savings was a mere 5.9% of their disposable income. Ten years later, it had dropped down to 1.3%. Now, most Americans are struggling with what is called …

Yo Soy Boricua/I am Puerto Rican

Actor and activist Rosie Perez has made her directorial debut with a new documentary, “Yo Soy Boricua Pa’ Que Tu Lo Sepas,” or “I’m Puerto Rican, Just So You Know.” Narrated by actor Jimmy Smits, “Yo Soy Boricua” is a cultural exploration that begins and ends with the annual Puerto Rican Day parade in New York. Throughout the film, Rosie Perez researches her own roots and heritage and explores a much ignored history between Puerto Rico and the United States. “Yo Soy Boricua,” answers the question of how the island of Puerto Rico became a commonwealth of the United States, highlighting the numerous contradictions that a commonwealth status brings. During World War II, Puerto Ricans …
