Religion, Politics and the End of the World – with Chris Hedges, Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens

The United States is one of the most religious countries on the planet with 91 percent of American adults saying they believe in God, and 82% of Americans identifying as Christian. Nearly 48% of the American pubic rejects the scientific theory of evolution. This forms a large part of George W. Bush’s evangelical Christian base. The Prisoner or How I Planned to Kill Tony Blair

In September 2003, Iraqi photojournalist Yunis Khatayer Abbas, was arrested along with his three brothers, in his home in Baghdad. For the US soldiers who conducted the raid, it was all in a day’s work. For Yunis, it was the beginning of an ordeal that changed his life. Eventually Yunis was informed that he and his brothers were arrested for planning the assassination of British Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Thinking it was a joke, Yunis assumed he would be released soon. But it was nine months later, and a stint at Abu Ghraib prison before he was released. Directors and Producers, Michael Tucker and Petra Epperline, makers of the acclaimed documentary, …

“I have seen war. I have seen war on land and sea. I have seen blood running from the wounded. I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed. I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war.” – Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Maxed Out

Most Americans have gone into debt or are in debt one point or another in their lives. Most of us have run up credit card or other forms of debt and been daunted by the prospect of paying it off. Most of us have one or more credit cards. In fact the average American has about eight credit card and about $8000 in debt per household. In 2003, consumer debt hit an all-time, record-high of $1.98 trillion, not counting mortgage debt. Household savings are also plummeting. In 1993, the average American’s savings was a mere 5.9% of their disposable income. Ten years later, it had dropped down to 1.3%. Now, most Americans are struggling with what is called …

“You can choose not to go to McDonald’s, you can choose not to eat badly and a lot of people do, but it’s impossible not to use credit in this country. Even if you’re the Unabomber and you’re completely off the grid, you’re still on the hook for the national debt, and your state debt, and your city debt. So debt affects everything in this culture.” — James Scurlock, director of “Maxed Out”
