Listen to this segment | the entire program

No End in SightGUEST: Charles Ferguson, Writer, Director, and Producer of “No End In Sight”

Oxfam and a network of about 80 aid agencies issued a report yesterday warning of a serious humanitarian crisis unfolding in Iraq. The crisis puts almost 8 million Iraqis at risk, which is a quarter of the population. Meanwhile between 10 and 50 Iraqis are being killed daily across the country. Study: California Voting Machines Can Be Hacked

Listen to this segment | the entire program

marchGUEST: Jim March, Board of Directors of Black Box Voting

A day long hearing was held in Sacramento yesterday to assess the findings of a recent University of California study on this state’s voting machines. Commissioned by Secretary of State Debora Bowen, the study found three certified voting machine systems to have faulty security systems. Released last Friday, Bowen’s “Top To Bottom Review” found that state sanctioned computer hackers were able to bypass security systems both physically and electronically to change voting results. Hackers were provided with all the vital security information made available to Secretary Bowen. Voting machine companies such as Diebold, and members of the public had the opportunity to address the conclusions of the review in yesterday’s hearing. Prior to that hearing both …

Listen to this segment | the entire program

murdered union leadersGUEST: Daniel Kovalick, an attorney with United Steelworkers

Last Thursday, jurors in a civil trial acquitted Alabama based coal company, Drummond Incorporated, of war crimes related to the 2001 killings of three Colombian union leaders. According to affidavits in the case, witnesses claimed to have seen Drummond’s Colombian chief executive hand over large sums of money to paramilitary commanders in exchange for the murders of the union leaders. Prior to the jury decision, Edwin Guzman, a former member of the Colombian …

Listen to this segment | the entire program

Make/shiftGUESTS: Jessica Hoffman, Stephanie Abraham, members of the Editorial Collective at make/shift Magazine

The era of independent publishing has been in peril for years now. Independent bookstores have been shutting down rapidly. Independent book publishers are financially struggling, and independent media in general have trouble reaching a sufficient subscriber base. This April we covered the closure of the collectively run online news outlet, The New Standard. And, last December, the cutting-edge radical magazine Clamor, published its last issue. But all is not lost, for an exciting new independently created magazine hit the stands earlier this year. Make/shift is a magazine about contemporary feminist culture and action whose first issue sold out within weeks of publication. It’s now in it’s second printing, even as the second issue gets …
