“Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters with America’s Warfare State”

Listen to this segment | the entire program

GUEST: Normon Solomon, author of “Made Love, Got War,” Founder and Executive Director of the Institue for Public Accuracy

From the hysteria over the Sputnik launching to the current quagmire in Iraq, activist Norman Solomon has lived through decades of America’s perpetual warfare state. Lessons learned from a lifetime of resisting are reflected upon through Solomon’s newest book, “Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters with America’s Warfare State.” Part autobiography, part social commentary, the book follows various social movements from civil rights, to anti-Vietnam War and anti-nuclear armament causes. “Made Love, Got War,” is harrowingly shadowed by an ever-present and never ignored possibility of nuclear armageddon. As the warfare state is equipped with the weapons of mass annihilation, Solomon mulls through the shortcomings and failures of movements past, while retaining …

Listen to this segment | the entire program

GUEST: Eve Tetaz, Founder of Pathways

76-year-old Eve Tetaz is set to appear before a senior DC Superior Court Judge on four misdemeanor charges Friday. Her crime? Engaging in civil disobedience to nonviolently protest the continued war and occupation of Iraq. Tetaz says she will plead no contest to the charges, which may result in jail time. The judge may decide instead to refuse her plea, which will result in trial. Tetaz, a longtime advocate for the poor on issues of economic and social justice, also founded Life Pathways, a non-profit that helps single parents become financially independent. The 76-year-old retired public schoolteacher says that in protesting the war she was obeying a higher law which decries the crimes against humanity that take place in Iraq. Listen to this segment | the entire program

GUESTS: Alex Nogales, National Latino Media Council Secretariat, Mark Reed, American Indians in Film and TV National Chair

The Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition released its seventh annual “Report Card” yesterday on the current diversity status of major television networks ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. Announced in a press conference outside of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the report cards summarized the growth or shortfalls of the networks’ efforts to diversify their workforce and increase minority vendor contracts in 2007. The National Latino Media Council cited diversity improvement at ABC, while NBC and CBS remained the same overall. The Fox network is the only of the major television networks to go down a grade falling to a B minus. The Asian Pacific American Media Coalition, for their part, voiced …

Failing to Recognize the Armenian Genocide

Listen to this segment | the entire program

GUEST: Zanku Armenian, Board of Directors for the Western Region Armenian National Committee of America

Congressional supporters of an Armenian Genocide Recognition bill put off a vote last week on the measure as pressure mounted from Turkish officials and the Bush Administration. Democratic Congressman and bill co-sponsor Adam Schiff was the lead author of a letter that stated that the resolution would be brought up at a more opportune occasion “sometime later this year or in 2008.” Upon the bills passage through the House of Foreign Affairs Committee earlier this month, Turkey withdrew its ambassador to the US and warned that a vote on the resolution could hamper relations between the two countries thus impairing US military operations in Iraq. Bush Administration officials weighed in against passing the recognition bill …

A Hard Look at New York’s Real ID

Listen to this segment | the entire program

GUEST: SJ Jung, President of the Young Korean American Service and Education Center in New York

New York Governor Elliot Spitzer announced a three tier driver’s license system last Saturday that includes compliance with the Federal Real ID act. Reversing an earlier “One Driver’s License for All,” proposal, the governor’s recent decision received sound condemnation from various groups. Real ID critics said that state driver’s licenses would be effectively turned into a national ID card through the plan. Concerns over privacy issues and implementation costs to the state were also cited. Though regulations for Real ID compliant licenses have not been finalized and the program is not set to be phased in nationally until 2013, Spitzer hopes to see his plan take effect next year. Aside from Real ID concerns …

Who’s Whitewashing The Arroyo Seco Murals?

Listen to this segment | the entire program

GUESTS: Man One, Artist, Lewis McAdams, Board Member of the Friends of the LA River

Friends of the LA River recently gained permits from the County and the City for artists to paint a large portion of the river walls near downtown LA. Graffiti writers from around the city gathered to create the largest production ever seen in Los Angeles – and some one thousand people headed down to the River to witness it. Days after the production was finished however, LA County Supervisor Gloria Molina expressed outrage over the murals. A long-time opponent of graffiti, Molina met with Friends of the LA River (FOLAR) stating she wanted the pieces whitewashed. A small portion of the wall space that was painted was not permitted, and FOLAR agreed that that portion …
