Argentina’s first lady, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has claimed victory in yesterday’s presidential elections. With 95 percent of the votes counted, Fernandez de Kirchner avoided a runoff with any of the 13 candidates by gaining about 45 percent of the vote. Fernandez de Kirchner didn’t debate or set forth clear political proposals – and largely road the economic boom that her husband, Nestor Kirchner set forward in this current term. A large part of current president Kirchner’s popularity comes from unorthodox economic policies set forth after Argentina’s break with the International Monetary Fund in 2001. Despite pressure from the IMF to target inflation and push for spending cuts, the austerity took an independent course. Argentina’s economy has …

Cooler temperatures and moist air over this past weekend allowed firefighters to gain the upper hand on several Southern California wildfires. More than a dozen of the fires have been fully surrounded, with others being at least 50 percent contained. Firefighters remain cautiously optimistic, however, as weather forecasters predict that warm gusty Santa Ana winds may return in the next week. The damage from the fires caused half a million people to evacuate their homes as 500,000 acres were destroyed across seven Southern California counties. The death toll from the inferno is at least seven, with four undocumented migrants found dead at the US – Mexico border. President Bush declared the California wildfires, which ravaged the Santa Barbara foothills …

Burning the Candle at Both Ends? Global Warming and the End of Oil
After Santa Ana winds finally subsided, firefighters gained the upper hand on the LA fires that have scorched California this past week – although fires in San Diego continue. The death toll from the inferno has reached at least 8, as nearly 800 square miles have been burned in the past six days. President Bush declared the California wildfires, which ravaged the Santa Barbara foothills down to the Mexican border, a “major disaster.” Amy Luers, California’s climate manager for the Union of Concerned Scientists, said of the wildfires that “while we can’t attribute these specific events to global warming, these are consistent with a trend of increasing wildfire activity throughout the …
