Oxfam Warns of Worsening Climate Change Hazards

Earlier this month Bangladesh was struck by the worst cyclone since 1991. Cyclone Sidr hit the impoverished South Asian country on November 15 with winds of 155 mph and a 5-foot tidal surge, killing around 3,500 people, leaving thousands missing or injured, and displacing 2 million. Meanwhile Oxfam International warns that natural disasters like Cyclone Sidr have quadrupled over the last two decades, from an average of 120 a year in the early 1980s to as many as 500 a year today. An officer outside a police department in Ohio used a stun gun yesterday to subdue a pregnant woman after forcing her to the ground. Authorities claim that the woman’s pregnant condition was not made known to the officer until after she was taken to jail and transferred to a hospital. The entire incident was caught on surveillance tape as the FBI and the police department are conducting a probe to determine whether excessive force was used. The videotaped tasing of the pregnant woman is just the latest high profile instance of the use of stun guns by police officers. Fair Trade and Conscious Gifts Crafts Sale

There will be a Fair Trade and Conscious Gifts Holiday Bazaar this Saturday December 1st from 11 am to 3 pm at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church in the Geneva Room, 3300 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. Over a dozen vendors will offer fair trade coffee and tea, hand made crafts by Afghan women, jewelry and art by local artists. Vendors include Afghan Women’s Mission, Ten Thousand Villages, Garment Worker Center, Pacifica Radio Archives, Global Voices for Justice, and others. There will be live performances and refreshments. LAUSD Moves to Protect Student Information

Anti-recruitment activists are hailing the recent announcement by the Los Angeles Unified School District of a new policy to better protect students’ personal information from the military. The policy is the result of discussions with teachers and the ACLU. It was approved late last month and just recently made available to district employees. Under the Bush Administration’s No Child Left Behind Act, public schools are required to make available students’ names and addresses to military recruiters upon request.

Going In: Once Upon a Time in South Africa

About 2.5 million people have been newly infected with the HIV virus this year. It is now estimated that more than 33 million people globally live with HIV. An overwhelming ninety-five percent of all HIV/AIDS cases occur in the developing world. The theme of this year’s International World AIDS Day on Saturday December 1st, is “leadership” and calls upon various sectors of society, not just governments, to address the AIDS challenge.
