“I am astonished each time I come to the U.S. by the ignorance of a high percentage of the population, which knows almost nothing about Latin America or about the world. It’s quite blind and deaf to anything that may happen outside the frontiers of the U.S.” -– Eduardo Galeano

GUEST: David Kotz, Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and coauthor of “Russia’s Path from Gorbachev to Putin: The Demise of the Soviet System and the New Russia.”
Earlier this week Russia announced its decision to withdraw unilaterally from the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty, angering the US and other NATO nations. The CFE was signed in 1990 and puts clear limits on the stationing of troops and heavy weapons from the Atlantic coast to Russia’s Ural mountains. The signing of the CFE was seen as an important step in ending the Cold War. Russian President Vladimir Putin justified the suspension saying that NATO countries have not ratified a revised version of the treaty. Meanwhile, Vladmir Putin endorsed his longtime aide, Dmitry Medvedev …

GUESTS: Ralph Camacho, organizer of the Southern California Anarchist Conference, Isaac Ontiveros, member of the AK Press Collective
Anarchism is perhaps one of the most misunderstood of all political philosophies. Distortions about anarchism from both the left and the right have obscured a non-monolithic radical tradition that opposes in various ways and means the institutions of the state, private property and capitalism. Locally, activists have organized the 2007 Southern California Anarchist Conference as a forum for connecting radical ideas with community. The Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research will host the conference’s two days of workshops and panels. Both anarchists and non-anarchists alike are encouraged to attend. Sponsoring organizations include the Anarchist Black Cross Federation and AK Press. The weekend’s events will close …

GUEST: John Entelis, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Middle East Studies Program at Fordham University, co-author of “The Algerian Civil War”
The death toll in the wake of Tuesday’s twin truck bombings in the capital of Algeria has continued to rise. Yesterday’s government figures placed the number of dead at 31 after rescue workers sought to uncover survivors as well as bodies from within the rubble of the targeted UN and government buildings in Algiers. Hospital figures place the number of victims at twice the government’s estimate while an Algerian independent newspaper noted that 200 were wounded. Among the confirmed dead were eleven U.N. employees, making the attack the bloodiest against the organization since a 2003 Baghdad bombing killed twenty-two. An Algerian al-Qaeda …

GUEST: Peter Hart, Activism Coordinator at FAIR, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting
Presidential electoral politics have provided fodder for breathless horse-race style reporting for most of the mainstream media for years now. Who’s the front runner and who’s made the most progress, become topics for many column inches and broadcast minutes each day. With the Iowa caucuses just weeks away, commentators and reporters are using unreliable poll results to make predictions, while ignoring real issues. According to Peter Hart of the media watch group, FAIR, “the media’s over-reliance on polls encourages a kind of political conversation that prioritizes strategic consideration and tactics over substance.”
