The Meeker Incident by Subversive Historian Gabriel San Roman
One-hundred and twenty-nine years ago on this day in people’s history, the “Meeker Incident†occurred. On September 29th, 1879, Nathan Meeker and ten other Bureau of Indian Affairs officials were killed by White River Ute Natives in present day Colorado. The BIA agents were attacked as Utes fought against the U.S. Army in the battle of Milk Creek. Nathan Meeker, who had sought to “civilize†the Utes into an agricultural society, had called for the army in the wake of a dispute. Already pushing the indigenous population towards starvation, Meeker ploughed up the horse pastures of the Utes in accelerating his racist efforts to impose his way of life on them. The ensuing violence gave the U.S. Federal Government the pretext they needed to forcefully displace …

Washington Mutual Incorporated collapsed this morning, buckling under the weight of its bad investments in mortgage markets, making it the largest bank failure in US history. If JP Morgan Chase had not bought up the bank, the Federal Deposit Insurance Company or FDIC, according to some analysts, could have used up half its money to cover account holders. As the US economy flounders with crisis after crisis, the Bush administration has been working with Congress to pass a massive $700 billion bailout of Wall Street that sparked nation-wide protests yesterday. In a meeting at the White House yesterday, House Republicans proposed an alternative plan at the last-minute, stalling the talks. If Bush’s plan, or some version of it passes this weekend, it will be the largest in US …

A new report by the Justice Policy Institute released yesterday details the proliferation of policing, immigration enforcement, and incarceration policies in the US over the last ten years. “Moving Target: A Decade of Resistance to the Prison Industrial Complex,†was written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the prison abolitionist group Critical Resistance. Among the report’s key findings is that over the past ten years the US prison population has grown by 32 percent as 454 new offenses have been added to the federal crime code. Furthermore, “Moving Target,†also notes that the number of immigrants detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement has increased almost exponentially – by more than 200%. Racial disparities also continue in terms of how many White drug-users and sellers are incarcerated …

The United Nation’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported last month on how Palestinian children are not protected enough from the Israeli occupation and internal fighting in the occupied territories. Three hundred and eighty six Palestinian children have been killed as a result of violence this year already. Forty four children were injured in September, all but one in the West Bank. In addition to those who are directly targeted by Israeli bullets, like 10 year old Ahmad Husam Yousef Mosa, and 15 year old Ahmad A’mira, the vast majority of Palestinian children suffer from treatable and avoidable medical conditions. Overcrowded clinics, underpaid and unpaid hospital staff, Israeli checkpoint barriers, and general malnutrition, have resulted in a worsening health care crisis for Palestinian children. …

The Makhnovist Defeat of the White Army by Subversive Historian Gabriel San Roman
Eighty-nine years ago on this day in people’s history, anarchist guerrilla fighters under the command of Nestor Makhno routed White Army forces in the Ukraine. On September 26th, 1919, the defeat of General Denikin’s forces was a pivotal moment in the Russian Civil War that followed the Bolshevik Revolution. The Makhnovists and the Red Army had been retreating for months before the battle as the White Army advanced both in the Ukraine and in Moscow. The Anarchist forces bolstered their ranks in the summer with many Red Army soldiers defecting to them, but were still numerically outnumbered. Nevertheless Makhno’s peasant insurrection managed to destroy two White Army regiments and General Denikin had to send troops from Moscow to the Ukraine which relieved …
