Taguba: Abu Ghraib Photos Show Rape and Sexual Abuse

Listen to this segment | the entire program

http://www.kelebekler.com/blogfig/abu_ghraib.jpgIn an interview this week with a British newspaper, a former US general revealed that allegations of rape and sexual abuse of Iraqi prisoners by US troops are confirmed in photographs. Former Major General Antonio Taguba was quoted in an interview with the Daily Telegraph that unreleased photos from Abu Ghraib show a female Iraqi prisoner being raped by a male soldier, as well as a male prisoner being raped by a male interpreter. There are also photographs of a female prisoner being forced to undress to reveal her breasts, and other prisoners being sexually assaulted with objects including a “truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.” President Obama recently reversed a campaign position by refusing to release photographs of detainee abuse from Iraq and Afghanistan, saying they would endanger US …

Amnesty Report Warns World on Verge of Global Unrest

Listen to this segment | the entire program

amnestyAmnesty International released its annual report yesterday, warning that that the world is on the verge of global unrest, with existing poverty severely worsened by the international economic crisis. In every major geographic area the report details conditions relating to social and economic insecurity, poverty and deprivation, and more. The social and economic inequalities in regions like Latin America show continued deprivation of food, shelter, health care and employment opportunities. Countries in which governments have little power are dominated by corrupt and abusive police forces as well as subject to gang violence. In Europe and Central Asia, there is fear that dwindling economies will bring about increased discrimination and a rise in hate crimes. The economic downturn and unemployment rates of affluent countries have also added to the global despair …

Subversive Historian – 05/29/09

Listen to this segment | the entire program

Eric Drooker The 40th Anniversary of “El Cordobazo”

Back in the day on May 29th, 1969, a planned strike and protest demonstration in Cordoba, Argentina turned into an all out urban revolt. Known to history as “El Cordobazo,” the broad based uprising in the industrial city exactly forty years ago had been galvanized by the authoritarian dictatorship of General Juan Carlos Ogania. With organized labor and university students being principle targets of Ogania’s self-proclaimed “Argentine Revolution,” the two forged a common unity against it. Under the leadership of unionists like Agustin Tosco, workers abandoned their factories as students and common citizens joined them in a march to the city’s center. After the first confrontation with police left one worker dead, public outrage boiled over into a spontaneous revolt that by one …

Governor’s Proposed Cuts Will End Welfare as We Know It

Listen to this segment | the entire program

budget cutsCalifornia Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed cuts to the state budget so deep that they could result in completely decimating the state’s safety net. In the aftermath of the May 19th special election, where voters rejected all but one budget measure, lawmakers now have an estimated $24 billion budget gap to fill. The governor interpreted the election results as a “very clear message to Sacramento: Live within your means, cut spending, slash the size of government, get rid of the waste and the inefficiency and don’t raise taxes.” The cuts are expected to entirely eliminate or drastically cut California’s main welfare programs including Healthy Families which provides health insurance to over a million children, ADAP, the AIDS Drug Assistance Programs, CalWORKS, a welfare-to-work program for poor families, cutting K-12 …
