Addicted to Plastic: The Rise and Demise of a Modern Miracle

The Northern California city of San Jose just passed a ban on plastic bags. It’s one of the country’s strictest bans, and reflects a growing awareness across the nation, as one city after another adopts similar bans. Proponents of such bans explain that plastic bags generate mountains of trash, clog waterways, and threaten marine and other life. Additionally the production of these bags also contributes greenhouse gases. A new documentary, Addicted to Plastic: The Rise and Fall of a Modern Miracle, examines plastic in its entirety, from how ubiquitous it has become in modern American life, to how pitiful recycling efforts really are, as well as the dangers of toxins released by plastics. It’s Canadian film maker Ian Connacher, traveled …

The Genius of Darwin

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of one of the most important scientific works of all time: The Origin of Species, the seminal work by biologist Charles Darwin, whose theory of evolution forms the basis of our understanding of all life. The theory of Natural Selection, by which species of living creatures evolve to adapt to their surroundings, is supported by evidence everywhere we look: fossils, carbon dating, gene mapping, animal domestication, plant breeding, paleontological digs, and simply the enormous similarities among species and across species. Despite the decades of scientific literature that has confirmed Darwin’s theory, and tweaked and improved on it, a shockingly large percentage of people, especially Americans, resolutely refuse to accept it. A recent Gallup poll revealed that only 39% of Americans …

The democratically elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya returned in secret to his country yesterday after being in exile for nearly 3 months following a right wing coup that overthrew him. The coup leader, Roberto Micheletti has warned that Zelaya faces arrest if he returned. The president is currently under the protection of the Brazilian embassy, near where a confrontation between police and protesters took place early this morning. Speaking to reporters by phone, Zelaya claims that the police and military have surrounded the embassy and warned that it could be invaded. There is a nationwide curfew in effect, with airports closed and roads leading to the capital Tegucigalpa blocked off. In an op-ed published in the Washington Post this morning, Roberto Micheletti claims that “an overwhelming majority of Hondurans support the actions” of the coup leaders.

President Obama continued his efforts to sell his healthcare proposals to the American public on Sunday, appearing on 5 Sunday morning talk shows. Obama admitted that the health care fight had “humbled” him. His media blitz comes ahead of a critical week in the legislature on the healthcare reform battle. Max Baucus, the Blue-dog Democrat from Montana, who heads up the crucial Senate Finance Committee convene his committee tomorrow for three days of debate on his version of the bill. Not surprisingly, Baucus’ version does not include even a government-run insurance option to compete with the private insurance industry. It does require mandatory insurance for all, a windfall for the industry, and would allow for older Americans to be charged five times as much as younger Americans for insurance premiums. Single …
