The Struggle to Define Arab Citizenship

Listen to this segment | the entire program

Arab citizenshipThe battle over Libya continues today with numerous reports of strongman Muammar Gaddafi’s forces losing control of city after city, including Benghazi, the Western city of Tobruk and the Eastern city of Misurata. Yesterday, the eccentric dictator gave a lengthy, rambling speech on State television that has become a hallmark of his rule. After Libya’s ambassador to the United Nations Ibrahim Dabbashi defected, the UN Security Council issued a strongly worded condemnation of government violence against protesters. Dabbashi criticized the statement for not being strong enough and claimed that Gaddafi’s speech was a code to his collaborators to begin a genocide against Libyans. In Yemen, tens of thousands of protesters continue to rally around the country, demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. On Monday President Saleh said he would …

Republicans Roll Out Nationwide Assault on Working and Middle Class

Listen to this segment | the entire program

OhioTens of thousands of Wisconsinites rallied yesterday morning inside the Capital Rotunda in Madison against Republican Governor Scott Walker’s union-busting budget proposal. Former Guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, Tom Morello, performed at the rally and afterward told Rolling Stone Magazine “[w]hat’s happened so far might be the most remarkable twenty-four hours of my life…I’ve never seen this kind of outpouring of unapologetic, steel-backboned support for union causes in the United States. The Madison police were delivering bratwurst to the protesters inside the capitol, and the kids were thanking them. It was unbelievable.” For more than a week members of all the major unions in Wisconsin, a state known for its strong pro-labor history, have assembled, protested, conducted sit-ins, sleep-ins, and more, capturing national attention. At stake is a budget proposal that …

The Right Hook – 02/23/11

Listen to this segment | the entire program

The Right HookThe Right Hook, a weekly segment which covers the machinations of the right wing, from the Republican Party to the Tea Party Patriots, and beyond. By Chris Bennett

Last Spring, as the health care debate was underway, Tea Party rallyers shouted racial epithets at Democrats outside the Longworth Building. Tea Party leaders responded to criticism over the incident by saying that any unruliness was likely caused by liberal “agents provocateur” planted in the crowd. No evidence was found for that claim. But now, former Tea Party Express chairman Mark Williams has hatched a scheme to sabotage the pro-labor demonstrations in Wisconsin and other states. Over the weekend, Williams blogged about his intentions for a pro-labor event in Sacramento. Williams’ plan was to don his …

New York Times: Billionaire Brothers’ Money Plays Role in Wisconsin Dispute

Among the thousands of demonstrators who jammed the Wisconsin State Capitol grounds this weekend was a well-financed advocate from Washington who was there to voice praise for cutting state spending by slashing union benefits and bargaining rights.

The visitor, Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity, told a large group of counterprotesters who had gathered Saturday at one edge of what otherwise was a mostly union crowd that the cuts were not only necessary, but they also represented the start of a much-needed nationwide move to slash public-sector union benefits.

“We are going to bring fiscal sanity back to this great nation,” he said.

What Mr. Phillips did not mention was that his Virginia-based nonprofit group, whose budget surged to $40 million in 2010 from $7 million three years ago, was created and financed in part by the secretive billionaire brothers Charles G. and David H. Koch.

Al Jazeera: Nations condemn Libyan crackdown

International condemnation is growing in response to reports that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is using tanks, helicopters and fighter jets to quell the most serious challenge to his four-decade-long rule.

Nearly 300 people are reported to have been killed in violence in the capital, Tripoli, and across the country as demonstrations entered their second week .

Joining a lengthening list of high-level defections, Abdul-Fatah Younis, the interior minister and an army general, announced on Tuesday that he was now on the side of the uprising and urged the Libyan army to join it.

Just hours earlier, Gaddafi vowed to fight on and die a “martyr” in a 75-minute-long speech broadcast on the north African nation’s state TV.

Michael Moore.Com: Statement of support to workers of Wisconsin from workers of Egypt

KAMAL ABBAS: I am speaking to you from a place very close to Tahrir Square in Cairo, “Liberation Square”, which was the heart of the Revolution in Egypt. This is the place were many of our youth paid with their lives and blood in the struggle for our just rights.

From this place, I want you to know that we stand with you as you stood with us.

I want you to know that no power can challenge the will of the people when they believe in their rights. When they raise their voices loud and clear and struggle against exploitation.

No one believed that our revolution could succeed against the strongest dictatorship in the region. But in 18 days the revolution achieved the victory of the people. When the working class of Egypt joined the revolution on 9 and 10 February, the dictatorship was doomed and the victory of the people became …
