What’s Behind Iraq’s Latest Violence?

Listen to this segment | the entire program

A suicide bomb in a Sunni mosque in Baghdad earlier this week killed 28 people, including a member of Iraq’s parliament. The violence follows a series of attacks over the weekend in various Iraqi cities including the capital Baghdad, and Basra, and Falluja, which led to 13 deaths. In mid-August, 70 people were killed and more than 300 wounded in a series of bomb blasts, including suicide and car bombs, and shootings seemingly coordinated across the country. Iraqis are worried about setting off a chain of violence similar to what happened in 2006 when the Shiite Golden Mosque in Samarra was bombed, eventually culminating in internecine warfare that left thousands dead. Politically Iraq is struggling to stabilize, with decisions being postponed for a year and a half over cabinet positions after …

Why Progressives Should Take a Deeper Look at Ron Paul and His Rightwing Ideas

Listen to this segment | the entire program

ron paulThe consequences of Hurricane Irene continue to plague residents of multiple states. President Obama today declared a major disaster area in New York, and large areas of New Jersey remain under water. Last night hundreds of thousands of Connecticut residents remained in the dark as electricity services to much of the state were down. Yet, conservative politicians continue to warn that the price tag of federal assistance to disaster victims is too high. Congressman and 2012 Presidential candidate Ron Paul jumped into the fray yesterday during an appearance on CNN*. In what turned into a debate with host Anderson Cooper, Paul said FEMA creates a dependency on the federal government, and drains national resources. This is consistent with his extreme Libertarian views, but not so consistent with the politics of …

States Push Mandatory Drug Testing for Welfare Applicants in New Conservative Trend

Listen to this segment | the entire program

Governor of Florida Rick Scott in early June declared on CNN that “[s]tudies show that people on welfare are using drugs much higher [sic] than other people in the population.” Politifact Florida, an online fact-checking project of the St. Petersburg Times, tried to verify his claim and found the Governor was inflating the statistics of one study, conducted over 10 years ago. Governor Scott had to backpedal and admit there was uncertainty around the hard numbers, but by that time he had already successfully secured a state law mandating drug testing for welfare applicants. An Orlando Sentinel Op-ed last week declared the nearly two month old law to be a failure, stating, “Scott’s looking for drugs in all the wrong places.” Only 2 percent of welfare applicants have tested positive so …

The Activist Beat – 08/31/11

Listen to this segment | the entire program

Activist BeatThe Activist Beat with Rose Aguilar, host of Your Call on KALW in San Francisco is a weekly roundup of progressive activism that the mainstream media ignores, undercovers, or misrepresents.

It’s Day 11 of the Keystone XL oil pipeline protests in Washington. Over 595 environmentalists and concerned citizens have been arrested for peacefully expressing their views in front of the White House.

Keystone XL is the $7 billion pipeline that will carry 500,000 barrels of dirty tar sands a day from Alberta, Canada down to Texas oil refineries.

Because so many people have been arrested, this action is finally getting national media attention, but not as much as it deserves. On Monday, Dr. James Hansen, a top NASA climate scientist, was arrested with 139 others.

In June, Dr. Hansen said the tar sands …

My Name is Rachel Corrie

Rachel Corrie, an American citizen, was only 23 when she was crushed by a bulldozer in Gaza in 2003 during a solidarity group action to prevent the demolition of Palestinian homes ordered by the Israeli government. An investigation by Israel determined her death was an accident. Her supporters contend she was murdered. The one-woman play based on the diaries and personal correspondence of its namesake premiered in London in 2005. Its US debut in Spring 2006 was delayed after the New York Theater Workshop postponed the opening date in the face of vehement protest by the Jewish community. The play was then picked up by Minetta theater in Greenwich Village and has since toured the United States and Canada. The September 1, 2011 performance of “My Name Is Rachel Corrie” at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon marks the play’s Los Angeles premier, running …

What’s Behind India’s Anti-Corruption Movement?

Listen to this segment | the entire program

Mass demonstrations activating huge portions of India’s usually apathetic middle class, have rocked the world’s largest democracy. At the heart of the protests is an unassuming man by the name of Anna Hazare who has used hunger strikes and civil disobedience in the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi to call attention to government corruption. India’s vast informal underground economy relies on routine bribes for services. Mr. Hazare wants to eliminate that system through the passage of a bill that would create an independent agency to investigate and prosecute corruption in government. To help pass this bill, a number of activists including Hazare created an organization called India Against Corruption (IAC), which organized mass rallies across India earlier in the year, followed by a hunger strike by Anna Hazare in April. This August, the …
