Journalist Acquires CIA Documents Proving US Involvement in 1953 Iran Coup

Sixty years ago last week, Iran’s new experiment with democracy was cut horribly short when Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh was overthrown in a coup.

The string of events that led up to today’s government can be traced to that coup, which journalists and historians maintain was directed by the US CIA.

In fact, CIA operative Kermit Roosevelt who oversaw the CIA’s role in the coup, revealed his role in interviews and a book after he resigned. But the CIA itself had never directly admitted its involvement.

Until now.

On August 19th 2013, the non-profit organization, the National Security Archive, reported that it had finally had its Freedom of Information Act Request to the CIA fulfilled, and had received documents showing that the coup was “carried out under CIA direction as an act of US Foreign Policy.”
