Border Patrol Nation: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Homeland Security – Part 2

A US Border Patrol agent fired several rounds of ammunition toward a private armed US citizen vigilante over the weekend near the Mexico border in Texas. The mix of an already well-staffed agency with a thousand National Guard troops which were deployed by Gov. Rick Perry, and right wing vigilantes from groups like Oathkeepers has created a dangerous situation at the border.

The Customs and Border Patrol is the largest federal law enforcement agency in the United States. Journalist Todd Miller has called CBP a “para-military” organization.

In his book Border Patrol Nation: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Homeland Security, Miller details the ever-expanding militarization of our border and the vague policies that allows Border Patrol to monitor locations far beyond the nation’s edge.

GUEST: Todd Miller has reported on US border issues for more than 15 years and has published his work in the New York Times, Mother Jones, the Nation, Tom Dispatch, and Salon. His book is entitled Border Patrol Nation: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Homeland Security. Today we’ll hear part 1 of a 2 part conversation.
