Who We Be: The Colorization of America – Jeff Chang’s Book Tackles Race and Culture Wars
The election of Barack Obama to the Presidency of the United States represented an historic moment of such great proportions that the entire world, not just the US, was enthralled. Yet, we continue to live during a time when Trayvon Martin could be shot and his killer walk away free. Conversations on race are always difficult. That difficulty says much about this nation’s history. So it is crucial for us to ask the questions: Are we living in post-racial America as some would suggest? Or do our lived experiences tell us other wise?
In a powerful new book, author Jeff Chang explores the evolution of American culture as it relates to race. The book is called Who We Be: The Colorization of America. In it Chang explores our history stretching from Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech, to the adoption of multiculturalism, the resulting white conservative backlash, the election of Barack Obama, more white backlash, and the killing of Trayvon Martin.
GUEST: Jeff Chang, author of Who We Be: The Colorization of America, and Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation. He is the Executive Director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford University and was named by Utne Reader as one of the 50 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World
Jeff Chang will be speaking in Oakland on Monday November 10th at 7:30 pm about his book, at the First Congregational Church, 2501 Harrison Street. Click here for more information.
