GUEST: Alisa Bierria, member of the Free Marissa Now Mobilization Campaign.

After three years in prison, the state of Florida has released Marissa Alexander after she accepted a plea deal for time served. The deal includes two years of house arrest. Inspiring nationwide protests and outrage, Alexander is an African American woman who was criminally prosecuted and imprisoned for using a gun to fire a warning shot to deter her abusive husband.

She was initially sentenced to 20 years in prison even though she was defending herself and no one was killed or even injured in the altercation. Alexander’s attorneys were unsuccessful in using Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground laws to legally justify firing a gun in self-defense, even though this seemed a textbook case.

Although she is free to go home, she remains under constant electronic surveillance and her movements are severely restricted. Advocates say that the fact that she is a woman, African American, and a victim of domestic violence, all contributed to a miscarriage of justice.
