GUEST: Laura Poitras just won the Best Documentary award in 2015 for her film Citizenfour…

The documentary telling the history-making story of how the National Security Agency spies on us all, won the Best Documentary award on Sunday at the Oscars. Film maker Laura Poitras was recognized with the industry’s highest honor for her film Citizenfour, which eerily documents the meeting that she and journalist Glenn Greenwald first had with the infamous whistle blower Edward Snowden, who is wanted in the US on espionage charges.

Laura Poitras is a founding editor of The Intercept, alongside award winning journalist Glenn Greenwald. She herself has been on a watchlist since the making of her films My Country, My Country, which was nominated for best documentary in 2006, and The Oath. Both of those films were about the US war in Iraq and the broader “Global War on Terror.” So it is only fitting that her third post-9/11 film about whistleblower Edward Snowden, entitled Citizenfour, focuses on the invisible war of mass surveillance against ordinary people.

The film, which has been in theaters since October tells, in intimate detail, the story of how Poitras and Greenwald first met Snowden in a Hong Kong hotel room just over a year ago. Sonali spoke with her in October about Citizenfour.

GUEST: …Laura Poitras was also nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary for My Country, My Country, and her second film, The Oath, was nominated for 2 Emmys. Her journalism on NSA surveillance received a George Polk award for National Security Reporting, the Henri Nannen Prize for Services to Press Freedom, and contributed to the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for public service awarded to The Guardian and Washington Post. She is the recipient of a 2012 MacArthur Fellowship, and currently lives in Berlin.
