When Edward Snowden revealed to the whole world that the US government’s National Security Agency was vacuuming up all the data it could on pretty much everyone it could, George Orwell likely rolled in his grave. The frightening dystopia of constant surveillance he had described seemed to have sprung up under our very noses and now it was laid bare.

In his new book They Know Everything About You, Robert Scheer deftly weaves together the threads of corporate data mining and government spying using counter-terrorism as justification. Scheer writes, “The data collected by private companies… is alarmingly intrusive and pervasive. Because it is based on the gullible cooperation of individuals deluded into thinking this data will not be shared with governments, the data-mining by for-profit corporations provides governments everywhere with a frightening mechanism of totalitarian control.”

The post-Snowden world is a terrifying one and no doubt many of us have already curtailed our own behavior for fear of appearing subversive. And this is exactly the function of the surveillance state and the anti-thesis of democracy. To explore these ideas for the hour I’m very pleased to welcome Robert Scheer in studio today!

In Southern California, Robert Scheer will be discussing his book at the Topanga Community House this Friday April 3rd at 7 pm (doors open 6 pm), 1440 Topanga Cyn. Blvd.
