A federal judge in California late last week ordered the immediate end to the detention of undocumented minors in the US. Under President Obama, a practice of imprisoning whole families in detention centers was expanded. The mostly privately-run facilities have struggled to maintain a reputation for being safe spaces for mothers and children.

US District Judge Dolly Gee on Friday issued her ruling to release children “without unnecessary delay.” She had already ruled against the practice earlier this year based on a violation of a 1997 court settlement on migrant children, but was asked by the government to reconsider. She dismissed the government’s arguments, calling them, “repackaged and reheated.”

Meanwhile, two immigration attorneys working with detainees found out recently that they were barred from a family detention center in Dilley, Texas for alleged violations of visitation rights. Immigrant rights advocates have denounced the move saying it is unprecedented to bar lawyers.
