In FBI’s Fight Against Apple, Public Is On the Side of Tech Companies and Privacy Rights

GUEST: Shahid Buttar, Director of Grassroots Advocacy at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Federal law enforcement agencies want to hack into the iPhone belonging to the suspected shooters in the massacre that took place in San Bernardino, California, last year and have asked Apple to give them access. Apple has resolutely refused, and polls show that much of the public agrees.

President Obama, at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, last Friday, touched on the current clash between the FBI and Apple, saying: “I anguish a lot over the decisions we make in terms of how to keep this country safe and I’m not interested in overthrowing the values that have made us an exceptional and great nation simply for expediency. But the dangers are real. Maintaining law and order and a civilized society is important. Protecting our kids is important. So I would just caution against taking an absolutist perspective on this.”
