Haiti’s Women and Girls More Vulnerable After Earthquake
Haiti’s earthquake has killed three prominent feminist activists, Myriam Merlet, Magalie Marcelin and Anne Marie Coriolan. All three women were founders of important advocacy organizations working on behalf of women and girls. Even before the devastating earthquake hit Haiti ten days ago, Haitian women and girls were among the most vulnerable people in the nation, with thousands subjected to trafficking, rape, and violence. Now, with about a million and a half Haitians homeless after the earthquake, women survivors are assuming the role of caretakers and community leaders and many aid organizations like Amnesty International and Action Aid are urging that women and girls be given protection and power. In one newly created refugee camp, survivors have set up an innovative system to reduce the incidence of rape. But concerns for women’s health and safety remain as Haiti struggles with a crumbling and devastated infrastructure.
