skid rowSkid Row is synonymous with homelessness and desperation in Los Angeles. But what most of us do not know is that it is also home to a vibrant artists community. A new documentary called Humble Beauty: Skid Row Artists, profiles a number of these artists as they produce stunning works at local art centers. Created by local film makers Letitia Schwartz and Judith Vogelsang, Humble Beauty reveals the incredible and colorful worlds on canvas by current and formerly homeless artists like OG Man, Enrique Marquez, Barbara Aduwa, and Joaquin Roebuck. Also featured are the dedicated local artists who run the spaces where Skid Row artists work, such as Lillian Abel Calamari of the SRO Housing Project, and Rory White of the Lamp Art Project. A recent review in FilmThreat.com called Humble Beauty “first-rate,” “profound,” and “masterful.”

Humble Beauty will screen in Los Angeles this Thursday March 5th at 7 pm at the KIWA Cultural Education Center 3471 W 8th street, near Wilshire and Western. The screening is sponsored by the Los Angeles Independent Media Center and the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance. The film screening will also be accompanied by an art exhibit featuring many of the artists in the film.

GUESTS: Letitia Schwartz and Judith Vogelsang, writers, producers, and directors of Humble Beauty
