Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin publicly announced on Friday her intentions to resign from the Governor’s office in Alaska. In a speech delivered from her home in Wasilla, Palin cited numerous reasons for her surprise decision including continually facing a slew of ethics complaints that she claimed detracted her from executing the duties of the office. In stepping down before completion of her first term as Governor, Palin stated on Friday that, “My choice is to take a stand and effect change - not hit our heads against the wall and watch valuable state time and money, millions of your dollars, go down the drain in this new environment. Rather, we know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time.” Resigning effectively on July 26th, Palin will be replaced by Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell who has already said he would run again for the office in 2010. Largely avoiding the gaze of the media since the resignation announcement, Palin has not yet said where her political career might take her next leaving many political analysts to declare this moment as the end of her meaningful presence in politics although some still speculate the prospect of a Presidential run in 2012 for Palin.
