About Uprising

Uprising Radio was founded in July 2003 by Sonali Kolhatkar, host and lead producer of Uprising. Uprising emphasizes connecting global issues with local ones. Simply informing listeners of the problems in the world and our communities is not enough - we hope to motivate our listeners to take an active role in their communities.

Uprising airs daily on KPFK, Pacifica in Southern California from 8-9 am on weekdays, Pacific Standard Time (If you live outside the Southern California area, you can listen to Uprising live every day by clicking here).

Uprising also has a Weekly Edition that uses the best of our national and international programming from the daily show. The Weekly Edition is syndicated nationally (find out how you can get Uprising’s Weekly Edition on your station - if you’re a listener - or a station Program Director).

STAFF

Sonali Kolhatkar - Host, Lead Producer

Sonali KolhatkarIn March of 2002, Sonali Kolhatkar, a 27 year old software engineer from Caltech, with a background in Astrophysics, decided to make a career change. She tried out for a position as host and producer for KPFK’s Morning Show, a two hour daily public affairs program. Today she hosts and produces Uprising every weekday morning. Sonali had long been an activist on the side, speaking out on issues such as women’s rights and US foreign policy in Afghanistan and is one of the founders and the co-director of Afghan Women’s Mission. She was a listener of KPFK who took part in the activities of listeners to reclaim the Pacifica network. Today Sonali serves as a staff representative on the KPFK Local Station Board. She also served in 2004 on the Pacifica National Board of Directors as a staff director. Her first book about US foreign policy in Afghanistan, co-authored with her partner, Jim Ingalls, is entitled, “Bleeding Afghanistan: Washington, Warlords, and the Propaganda of Silence,” (Seven Stories, Fall 2006).

Gabriel San Roman - Assistant Producer

Gabriel San Roman first began producing segments for Uprising Radio as a volunteer in April 2005. In September 2005, he finally joined the show as an Assistant Producer. At 23 years old, Gabriel was the youngest and first Chicano producer on Uprising Radio. He has a degree in History with an emphasis on Latin America and a minor in Religious Studies from the University of California at Riverside (2004). He has published in Znet, Zmag, Third World Resurgence and the OC and Pasadena Weeklies. In the Spring of 2006, Gabriel edited and produced the radio adaptation of the groundbreaking play, “The Mexican OC: Triumphs and Contributions of Orange County’s Mexican Communities.” In the winter of 2006, he produced and co-hosted “Cuban Hip Hop: By Any Means Necessary,” with documentarian Vanessa Diaz which brought the Los Angeles-area listening audience two hours of music and discussions on the Hip Hop Movement of the island nation of Cuba. Maintaining an interest in music and politics, Gabriel is currently working on a scholarly article on the history of the New Song Movement in Chile during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

VOLUNTEER STAFF

Jo Shannon - Email List Manager

Jo Shannon became a California transplant from Michigan in 1999. Having always been somewhat of a midwest thinker “outside the box”, it didn’t take her long to discover KPFK. She has since volunteered her time working on Sonali’s website and daily digest and the phone banks during KPFK’s fund drives. She can also be spotted in occasional peace marches around California. The rest of her time is spent producing small theatre venues, writing websites, and teaching music. She strongly believes in Anderson Cooper’s words, “Hope is not a plan”. If you want change you must first take your own initiatives and then motivate others to join you.
