ABOUT UPRISING RADIO ...

Uprising Radio was founded in July 2003 by Sonali Kolhatkar, host and co-producer of Uprising. Since then, it has evolved with it's various co-producers who make the show what it is. Uprising emphasizes connecting global issues with local ones. Simply informing listeners of the problems in the world and our communities is not enough - we hope to motivate our listeners to take an active role in their communities.

Uprising airs daily from 8-9 am on weekdays, Pacific Standard Time. The show also streams live on www.kpfk.org. Uprising is co-produced Sonali Kolhatkar and Gabriel San Roman. Teddy Robinson is the engineer.

STAFF

Sonali Kolhatkar

In March of 2002, Sonali Kolhatkar, a 27 year old software engineer from Caltech, with a background in Astrophysics, decided to make a career change. She tried out for a position as host and producer for KPFK's Morning Show, a two hour daily public affairs program. Sonali had long been an activist on the side, speaking out on issues such as women's rights and US foreign policy in Afghanistan and is one of the founders and the co-director of Afghan Women's Mission. She was a listener of KPFK who took part in the activities of listeners to reclaim the Pacifica network. Today Sonali serves as a staff representative on the KPFK Local Station Board. She also served in 2004 on the Pacifica National Board of Directors as a staff director. She is currently working on her first book about US foreign policy in Afghanistan.

Gabriel San Roman

Gabriel San Roman first began producing segments for Uprising as a volunteer in April 2005. In September 2005, he finally joined the Uprising team as an assistant producer. At 23 years old, Gabriel is the youngest and first Chicano producer on Uprising. He has a degree in History and a minor in Religious Studies with an emphasis on Latin America from the University of California at Riverside (2004). He has published in Znet and is awaiting publication in the Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies.

VOLUNTEERS - (Click here to find out how you can volunteer)

Jo Shannon is Uprising's web volunteer - she keeps all the show information updated on this site and archives past shows. Jo is originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she earned a teaching degree in music at Western Michigan University and taught school in the Detroit area for over 25 years. After retiring from teaching, she owned a franchised business in Flint, MI for two years and then five years ago decided to move to California to join her two daughters (one is an actor, the other a nurse), and her 11 year old grandson. She has since been teaching music and computers in a private school in Downey, maintains websites, joined the actor's community, and is establishing a piano practice in California. Jo also has a private pilot's license, travels all over the U.S. and central Europe playing string bass in several symphony orchestras and chamber music groups, singing in barbershop choruses, and a private piano practice in Michigan of over forty Suzuki students. During the past three years Jo has volunteered in KPFK's phone room during fund drives, updated this website, and have become a peace activist by participating in peace rallies in San Francisco and L.A.

Uprising's theme song is based on a track by Eight and a half Souvenirs, called "Off White" from their Souvonica album.
