The Bombing of the LA Times by Subversive Historian Gabriel San Roman

Ninety-eight years ago on this day in people’s history, the Los Angeles Times newspaper was bombed. On October 1st, 1910, twenty-one people were killed as planted dynamite exploded igniting barrels of ink near the building. The bombing occurred during the Los Angeles Iron Workers strike that demanded a modest wage increase. The owner of the LA Times during the bombing was Harrison Gray Otis, a vehemently anti-union conservative who used his newspaper as well as his position in the Merchants and Manufactures’ Association to assail against organizing workers. Prominent trade unionists James B. and John J. McNamara plead guilty to the act; however, additional terms agreed to by the brothers in the bargain were ignored.

Perhaps editorializing just a tad, the LA Times called the bombing of its building “the crime of the century.” It was only 1910 after all…
