Daily News Flash with Maya Rockeymoore on US “Core Coalition” Against ISIS, NATO Force Deterring Russia, and NYPD’s Body Worn Cameras
Uprising’s guest expert Maya Rockeymoore, President of the Center for Global Policy Solutions, a social change non-profit dedicated to making policy work for people and their environment, analyzes today’s news headlines:
The US has cobbled together a coalition to target the Islamic State in a wider war. Taking advantage of the NATO Summit happening today in Wales, US Secretary of State John Kerry gathered together a number of country representatives to join the US in a “core-coalition” against the Sunni rebel group ISIS that has taken over Northern Iraq and Syria. Kerry addressed the group on the sidelines of the NATO Summit, saying, “We need to attack them in ways that prevent them from taking over territory, to bolster the Iraqi security forces and others in the region who are prepared to take them on, without committing troops of our own.” The coalition of 10 consists of the US, Britain, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Turkey, Italy, Poland and Denmark, and not a single Arab nation. The US already has “boots on the ground,” with hundreds of troops and special advisers supplementing an air war in Northern Iraq. Click here for a Guardian newspaper article about the story.
Meanwhile, at the actual NATO summit in Wales, the main order of the day has been to set up a “rapid response force” drawn from member states, to respond to Russia’s growing boldness in Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said, “It sends a clear message to any potential aggressor: Should you even think of attacking one ally, you will be facing the whole alliance.” The move is seen by analysts as a clear attempt to revive NATO’s flagging mission meant to keep Russia at bay after the Cold War. But whether such a move is even needed is in question as Ukrainian and Russian negotiators meet today in Minsk, Belarus, to start ceasefire negotiations. The meeting has had an optimistic tone so far. Click here for an RT.com article about the story.
The New York Police Department, in an apparent move to quell criticism over police brutality, has announced that some of its precincts would start issuing wearable cameras for officers. NYPD Commissioner William Bratton announced a year long testing phase for the program at 5 busy precincts to provide greater accountability to the public, particularly over the controversial and racially discriminatory practice of stop-and-frisk. New York’s previous mayor Michael Bloomberg had shied away from body-worn cameras. Many questions still remain on the costs, effectiveness, and policies governing their use.
