General Augusto Pinochet, who would soon reign as dictator, headed the violent US-backed military coup against President Salvador Allende. In the course of the day\u2019s events, the Moneda presidential palace was bombarded under siege until, as the president\u2019s personal physician attested, Allende committed suicide. The immediate detention, torture, exile and disappearance of thousands of government supporters soon followed. Victor Jara, a popular folk singer, came to symbolize the repression when he was machine-gunned to death in the halls of Estadio Chile.
