In its official statement the Norwegian Nobel Committee states that \u201cit has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.\u201d The Committee has attached special importance to Obama&#8217;s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons. Many were shocked by the unexpected choice so early in a presidency that began less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline for the prize and has yet to yield concrete achievements in peacemaking.
