<\/a>On Monday, LA-based gang intervention activist Alex Sanchez was denied bail for a second time. The \u201cHomies Unidos\u201d co-founder and Executive Director has been held in custody since late June on federal racketeering charges. Despite community supporters gathering more than $2.5 million dollars in sureties and property deeds to secure his release, US Ninth Circuit Court Judge Manuel L. Real deemed Sanchez a \u201cflight risk,\u201d in his decision to deny bail. The widespread show of support, which has included more than 120 letters written on Sanchez\u2019s behalf, was characterized on Monday by the judge as a possible means by which the activist could flee the country. In the indictment against him, Sanchez, who had once been a member of the Salvadoran Mara Salvatrucha street gang, stands accused of being a \u201cshot caller,\u201d in the gang, leading a double-life while receiving public funds for his \u201cHomies Unidos\u201d organization. He is specifically named in a 2006 conspiracy involving the murder of a member of the MS-13 gang in El Salvador. Father Gregory Boyle, as a gang expert and Executive Director of \u201cHomeboy Industries,\u201d offered a formal statement after having reviewed wiretapped phone conversations held as evidence against Sanchez. Boyle asserts that after retranslating the tapes, a crucial piece of evidence was missed when a participant in the call noted Sanchez as no longer part of the gang. Judge Real dismissed the statement. <\/p>\n
