As President Obama mulls over his Afghanistan war strategy, most likely adding 10,000 to 40,000 troops, it is fitting on Veterans Day to examine the state of US troops. Last week’s tragic shooting at Fort Hood, Texas by an Army psychiatrist that left thirteen people dead underscores the dire mental state of American soldiers. A study by the RAND corporation in 2008 revealed that some 20% of all soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. The extremely high numbers of suicides among returning soldiers is one indication of a serious mental health epidemic. Last month alone 16 soldiers committed suicide both here and on active duty overseas. That brings to a total of 134 suicides so far this year, a pace that is likely to outdo last year’s record high of 140 deaths by suicide among troops. There are currently 24 million veterans of the US’s wars over the past century. Six hundred and twenty one thousand have died since World War I through today. Veterans Day is the 11th day of the 11th month of the year – a day originally known as Armistice Day to mark the end of combat in World War I more than 90 years ago. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers have been suffering from the after effects of war and resisting war since then.
