The legislation enacted exactly one-hundred and forty year ago today claimed \u201cto provide for the protection and management of the Aboriginal Natives of Victoria.\u201d In actuality, the act gave white dominated boards the authority to control among other things where indigenous peoples could live, where they worked, and how much they earned in wages. The colonial legislation also assumed custody, care and educational responsibilities of Aboriginal children leading to the stolen generations. The policies set forth at a time when greater democratic reforms were being granted to white Australians were for anything but the protection of indigenous peoples.
