Once upon the grounds of the former federal penitentiary, the activists issued a proclamation to the \u2018Great White Father and his People.\u2019 The words of the document read, \u201cWe are on Alcatraz Island to make known to the world that we have a right to use our land for our own benefit,\u201d and ended with the emphatic slogan \u201cWe Hold the Rock.\u201d The occupation that began forty years ago today demanded that the U.S. government recognize Native peoples&#8217; claim to the territory so that they could develop numerous institutions including spiritual, educational, and ecological centers.
