According to police, a suicide car bomb exploded near one gate, and less than an hour later, two mortar shells landed near the ministry. At least 21 people have been killed. Last Saturday 8 U.S. troops and four American civilians died aboard a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter that crashed in northern Iraq. Violence and killing in Iraq have become so commonplace that most Americans barely react to this kind of news. But now about 200 prominent women activists from the US, Iraq and other countries have signed on to a peace plan to pull out of Iraq. The campaign is being spearheaded by Codepink and from now until March 8th, International women’s Day, they will be gathering signatures. Among the original signees are Alice Walker, Susan Sarandon, Margaret Cho, Dolores Huerta, Eve Ensler, Congresswomen Barbara Lee, Lynn Woolsey, and Cynthia McKinney. Also on the list is Yanar Mohammed, President of Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq.

For more information, visit www.womensaynotowar.org

Sign the petition here.

Empire Notes
GUEST: Rahul Mahajan, author of Full Spectrum Dominance and The New Crusade

We go now to our weekly commentary Empire Notes by Rahul Mahajan, author of Full Spectrum Dominance and The New Crusade. It’s called “The Heart of Whiteness : Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege.” In it, Jensen offers an honest and rigorous exploration of what he refers to as the “depraved nature of whiteness” in the United States. He refers heavily to his own personal experience and uses data and theory to analyze racism and white privilege. Jensen’s main point is that any system that denies non-whites their full humanity also keeps whites from fully accessing their own. Robert Jensen’s previous book was “Citizens of the Empire : The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity.”

Black Commentator
GUEST: Glen Ford, co-publisher of The Black Commentator

The Black Commentator is an online political magazine bringing you commentary, analysis and investigation from a black perspective. A dream of equality of opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed; a dream of a land where men will not take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few; a dream of a land where men will not argue that the color of a man’s skin determines the content of his character; a dream of a nation where all our gifts and resources are held not for ourselves alone, but as instruments of service for the rest of humanity; the dream of a country where every man will respect the dignity and worth of the human personality.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

“The world does not need white people to civilize others.
