The counter-culture gathering first announced on the cover of the San Francisco Oracle attracted tens of thousands to the city\u2019s Golden Gate Park. The event had evolved from an earlier gathering called the \u201cLove Pageant Rally\u201d that narrowly focused on the banning of LSD as an illegal substance in 1966. The organizers of the \u201cBe-In\u201d had expanded horizons and hoped to bridge the gap that they saw in the youth movement between Berkeley style radicals and Haight-Ashbury style hippies. The effort to promote \u201ca union of love and activism,\u201d featured the participation of people like Allen Ginsburg, Dick Gregory, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Timothy Leary was also present and gave his famed \u201cTurn On, Tune In, Drop Out\u201d speech.
