The Assassination of Oscar Romero <\/strong><\/p>\nBack in the day on March 24th, 1980, Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador was assassinated. Thirty years ago, in the midst of a bloody civil war, Romero gave a homily a day before his death that was broadcast throughout the Central American nation. In it, he implored the rank and file members of the national army to stop killing their fellow peasants. His voice spoke with courage despite repeated death threats, as he said; \u201cNo solider is obliged to obey an order that is contrary to the will of God.\u201d Falling on deaf ears, Romero\u2019s plea to the soldiers themselves immediately put him within the assassin\u2019s scope. The next day, as Romero gave a homily at an evening mass, a single bullet pierced his heart killing him within minutes. As this anniversary illustrates, the killers could not silence the memory of his example of faith and justice that thrives to this very day.<\/p>\n
