The federal agency is looking into why twenty-six million dollars was allocated to a development company to construct a housing project for homeless and disabled seniors despite one of its financial partners being indicted for misuse of public funds. With the Department’s failure of proper oversight, qualifying seniors remain unable to move into the empty 92-unit Bonnie Brae Village building. Such shortcomings in assuring housing as a human right by the city will be the focus of a special hearing tonight. Hundreds of residents are expected to attend the meeting of the LA City Council’s Housing, Community and Economic Development Committee. Specific recommendations for vast improvements will be made by the city-wide Los Angeles Housing as a Human Right Collective based, in part, on the report of Raquel Rolnik, a United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing. Rolnik traveled to Los Angeles last fall as part of an official visit to the United States. Among the policy suggestions the housing rights collective is expected to make for Los Angeles is a city-wide rent freeze, stricter enforcement of habitable repairs and the preservation of public housing.

GUESTS: Becky Dennison, Co-Director of Los Angeles Community Action Network, Bilal Ali, Lead Organizer, Coalition LA

EVENT INFORMATION

What: Special Meeting of the City Council’s Housing, Community & Economic Development Committee (HCED) to hear and act on the recommendations given by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing and the City-wide tenant alliance of the Los Angeles Housing as a Human Right Collective.

When: Wednesday, April 14, 2010, 6pm-8pm

Where: Nate Holden Performing Arts Center
4708 W.
