In response to budget cuts, the University of California introduced on Wednesday new controversial enrollment waiting lists. Modeled after those used in private educational institutions, nearly 11,000 students had their hopes of getting into college placed on hold. The waiting lists, which are being employed in the Cal State University system as well, are being used to ensure that enrollment reductions are adhered to. As education in California, and indeed around the nation, increasingly becomes a battleground for social justice, internationally renowned radical educator Antonia Darder will be giving a public lecture at Loyola Marymount University on culture and power in the academy. A Professor of Educational Policy Studies and Latino Studies at the University of Illinois, Darder studied and worked with Brazilian pedagogical theorist Paulo Freire. She has authored numerous books focusing on identity, language, and critical pedagogy. Outside the academy, Darder is a community radio programmer who hosts and produces the show, \u201cLiberacion,\u201d on WEFT FM in Urbana, Illinois. At LMU, she also will be screening her film \u201cBreaking Silence: The Pervasiveness of Oppression,\u201d which explores critical media as a public pedagogical tool for community dialogue aimed at transforming institutions.<\/p>\n
