The Terror Bombing of Guernica<\/strong><\/p>\nBack in the day on April 26th, 1937, the civilians of Guernica were terror bombed from above during the Spanish Civil War. German and Italian bomber planes, at the behest of Fascist General Francisco Franco, attacked the cultural capital of the Basque people for more than three hours. The onslaught wrought much death and destroyed three quarters of a town where no legitimate military target could be claimed. Franco denied responsibility for the aerial attacks that caused hundreds of deaths. Beyond doubt, the fascist general authored the bombings to terrorize a symbolic center of a population that resisted his Nationalist forces. The atrocity committed that day led famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso to interpret the horrors of war in his now iconic \u201cGuernica\u201d painting. <\/p>\n
Sixty-six years later, a reproduction of Picasso\u2019s work was concealed by a blue drape in the United Nations as then Secretary of State Colin Powell gave a historic speech inside justifying the impending U.S. invasion of Iraq. The painting\u2019s power to shame the warmongers, however, was apparent for all to see. <\/p>\n
