By Chris Bennett<\/em><\/p>\nThis week we take a look at a brand-new university: Glenn Beck University, which holds its first non-accredited, online lecture this evening entitled Faith 101 by revisionist historian David Barton. According to Professor Barton, it is a myth that the Founding Fathers wanted a separation of Church and State. Other classes available for the low, low price of $9.95 per month, or $74.95 per year, are Hope 101 taught by David Buckner, and Charity 101 taught by James R. Stoner, Jr. Glenn Beck University sports a green and gold crest bearing a likeness to George Washington, a buffalo–now extinct, and either an eagle’s feather or a quill pen. The school’s motto is “Revolution against tyrants– Submission to God.” Glenn Beck, who claimed to have educated himself “for free” at public “socialist” libraries funded by taxpayers, has now started up a pay-per-view educational institution. Though there is no degree program, Mr. Beck may have tapped into the familiar “I want my country back” dislocation and confusion Americans across the political spectrum are feeling. While the Fiction and History Departments at Glenn Beck U. may be hard to distinguish, classes get underway tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. <\/p>\n
Before the 4th of July weekend, Senators went home for vacation without extending unemployment benefits during the worst job market in the U.S. since the Great Depression. In a staggering collective failure of leadership, Washington elites are propagating a new paradigm which counters the assumption that full employment in the U.S. is attainable. According to Richard Eskow, a writer for the Curbing Wall Street project, policy elites are lowering the bar on Americans’ expectations by surrendering to chronic joblessness, giving up on efforts to save Social Security, and asking Americans to accept a “jobs Apartheid” where African American unemployment remains roughly double that of white unemployment. Rather than aggressively tackle a bloated Pentagon budget run amok or bank bailouts, the policy elite are content to take it out on the backs of the nation’s jobless and elderly. <\/p>\n
Republican House minority leader John Boehner of Ohio continued his feud with President Obama recently by releasing a video saying the president was focused on the wrong priorities. Last week, in an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Boehner stated that the Wall Street reform bill moving through congress was comparable to “killing an ant with a nuclear weapon.” <\/p>\n
Boehner is fighting off members of the right wing who believe he may not be the one to lead them to electoral victories in November. While Boehner works on converting American anxiety over two hot wars and a foundering economy into electoral glory in November, the right wing continues to oppose stimulus and reinvestment in a green economy even as it shreds the social safety net which keeps Americans from the vagaries of joblessness, homelessness, and malnutrition. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
